Excerpt from Craft Corps (Chapter 4):
"VH: As a mother, I'm really conscious of informing young boys of non-traditional, creative career paths. As someone who's followed that path, do you have any advice for kids who may not be aware of their options?
ER: Sure. AS I get older, I feel more responsible for encouraging kids. If a chikd studies a creative path he is drawn to, teachers should encourage him to apply that art in other studies as well. I always look at Flash design and programming: 90 percent of the beautiful creations you make also involve math. Patterns are also about math. I guess ther are lines of study that meld different subjects.
VH: If that had been presented to me, I would have had a completely different journey. If somebody had taught me geometry within the context of quilting, or algebra within the context of knitwear design, maybe I wouldn't have struggled so much in math.
ER: Thank you. You totally just put it into the words I was looking for. Think about all the patterns and shapes in geometry and knitting. Exactly! But it's kind of like sneaking healthy ingredients into treats. "
