Craft Corps Giveaway Day 11: Travis Nichol's Books!

UPDATE: THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. THE WINNER IS:

Kathy Kitt

Please e-mail your snail mail address to: contests@vickiehowell.com within the next week to receive your prize. Congratulations!

Name: Travis Nichols

Gig(s): Cartnoonist & Novelist

Excerpt from Craft Corps (Chapter 21):

"VH: How have you been treated within the craft community because of your gender, and also because being a cartoonist sometimes falls into a different category? I suppose you're in a different position than some other men in the industry becayse you lived in Austin, where it's not all that peculiar for a guy to make a living crafting. Out in the big world though, it would be.

TN: As far as the crafting community goes, I felt immediately welcomed by it. Being able to share booths with the Craft Mafia was fun. Although maybe you just invited me because you wanted someone with upper body strength, in which case you were barking up the wrong tree. Seriously though, I felt like I had an advantage, as if white males need another advantage in society. I remember several years ago, I posted a tutorial on Craftster for Care Bear costume I made, and I still get e-mails about it at least once a month. That was years ago. I think it benefited me to be one of maybe 10 guys posting on the boards.

VH: It was a bit of a novelty then, but that seems to be changing now, due in large par to community. There are boards, groups, Internet hubs, and things that nurture genderless crafting. Do you find that you're coming across more male counterparts now?

TN: It's more normal now. I actually have to make good stuff now, instead of just being able to get by because I'm a guy."
