Name: Denyse Schmidt
Gig(s): Quilt Author, Artist and Fabric Designer
Excerpt Craft Corps (Chapter 13):
"VH: When did you start quilting?
DS: You know, it's funny, I didn't grow up quilting; I grew up sewing. I'd already had a career in New York as a modern dancer and performer, and went back to school for graphic design. I moved to Connecticut and ended up working at a children's book publisher. It paid really well, but was creatively a little stifling, Prior to that, I had become intrigued by quilts. Before I went to Rhode Island School of Design, I had taken some drawing classes at a museum and was really interested in the idea of collage and discovered crazy quilts. I became interested in the quilt as object. Textiles and sewing had always been part of what I did, so I think it was natural extension of my graphic design work."

My mom has been quiliting for YEARS - I used to love watching her match up all of the different fabrics then cut out the hundreds of triangles and squares. She'd pin them all together on the living room floor... it was like magic seeing all these little pieces become one finished blanket. She used to make them for extra $$, now you only get one if you're special - or you have a new baby.
ReplyDeleteKaren Wagner.
