Lemon Drop Scarf!

Photo: Jennifer Perkins

Made with 3 balls of ROCK in color: Jeremy and 1 ball in "Trent"

In Austin, there are maybe 2 weeks total out of the year that a heavy-weight scarf is wearable. I enjoy the neck decor though (and you know, also the knitting of it) so, I whipped up the Lemon Drop: a light, lacy scarf made with VHC Rock yarn.
A larger needle and dropped stitch pattern makes for a quicker knit, coupled with a tighter seed stitch stripe for added cinching and waviness.   Try it, you'll like it!  I mean, I'm not comparing my Lemon Drop to the candy or the martini but if the best things in life are free, then this pattern definitely qualifies!
Get it as our gift to you with purchase of Rock yarn!  Can't find the VHC Collection of yarn at your local yarn store?  No problem!  Click this button to snag supplies for this scarf, now.
Happy knitting!

Procrastination Nation

I have tons of tax-related paperwork to attend to...so of course, I've surfing the web instead.

Here are some of the cool knit-related stuff I came across, while visiting Procrastination Nation:

When Dave and I were in NYC last fall we happened upon a bar in the East Village.  As we were sipping our libations and Ani DiFranco song came on over the sound system, at which point I complimented the bartender on her choice in music (I'm a sucker for punk-folk!).  We ended up getting in a long conversation about the singer's career, concerts we'd been to, etc.  For some reason I'd fallen out of the Righteous Babe loop over the past few years and didn't know that she'd had a baby.  Six months later, I finally looked her up and OMG--look at little Petah Lucia's mohair booties!  *squeal*  I must send some of the "Ani" color of Rock yarn to the record company so that whomever made her these beauties, can whip her up a little something in her mommy's namesake yarn.

The other night at the knitting class I taught, I met a woman who spins the MOST AMAZING yarn!  Along with traditional fibers like mohair and wool, she also incorporates sequins and other sparkly goodness.  Venus Art handspun originals can be found on her Etsy page.

While you're over at Etsy, check out Toggle's ,envy-inducing Ramone's crocheted record pillows.  When you "want to be sedated", these would be perfect to rest your weary head on.  ;) Get it?  No?  Ok, moving on.  Oh, and since you're there already, you might as well stop my Etsy shop, too!  Okgoodthanksbye. (P.S.  Toggle, you should totally be making these in VHC Rock yarn in coor: Joan ;))
If and when I ever get a studio with a large enough blank wall to accommodate this mural, I'm totally getting it.  I know it's pre-fab but seriously, it's also kick-awesome!  I found this on the Knit.1 blog but the Italian website it's sold on (in customizable background and graphic colors!!) is here.

Lastly (for now), I checked in on one of my favorite designers, Stephanie Japel (Glampyre Knits), and saw that she had her baby.  Big hugs and congratulations to the new mom, and wee babe in her strawberry chapeaux!

Happy Knitting!,
Vickie

Thoughtful Crafter

I obviously loves me some Sandi Genovese or else I wouldn't have named a color after her for my Craft line of yarn.  I respect her as an artist, TV host and business woman.  I just wanted to share with you though, how thoughtful she is as a friend as well.  Most of the crafty people I know (often, me included) have given up paying attention to the personal touches in gift giving, especially when it comes to our loved ones.  Ironic, I know, but there's only so much time in the day.  Sandi however, remains faithful to her craft in all aspects of her life.  I feel honored to reap the benefits of her generosity of spirit.

Yesterday, Dave and I received a wonderful wedding gift from her in the mail which included this handmade card from her line....

and the COOLEST, eco-friendly platter, made from international newspapers (adorned with lemons from her backyard).

We just love it--and I was so touched that she remembered us.  I can't believe we're only 2 months away from our 1 year wedding anniversary!  Crazy.

So to recap:  Handmade cards=sweet! Eco-platters=awesome.  Thoughtful crafters=kick ass.

That's all.  Thanks for listening.  :)

Felt on Felt Action

I got a chance to mess around with Janome's fancy needle felting machine last week, and it is all kinds of mad fun!  I've done a lot of manual needle felting in the past, even demo-ing it on Stylelicious and in Not Another Teen Knitting Book --so I was eager to see what the big woop about the machine version was.    It's cool because it allows you too free-form felt in no time, using yarn, roving or scraps of certain fabrics.  For detailed work like geometric shapes or letters , I'll probably always stick with the original method of using a single needle and foam square (I'm old-school like that)--but for larger pieces or when I'm going for a collage effect, I'm totally a machine convert.

As I've now entered what I like to call the ANFM (after needle felting machine) Era, I also needed (I promise, there was need involved) to make something to commemorate the occasion. Combining my current felt obsession with my vow to stop wasting so much yarn, I whipped up this little Seaweed pillow.  The body and weird grassy-looking shape are made from plain old felt, and the underwater-foliage-looking design is needle-felted using scraps of Vegas yarn in colors: Casino and Martini.  I kinda dig it!

Enough about felting, how are you feeling?   In the mood to learn to knit?  (I know, cheap segue. They can't all be winners.)
If you're in Austin and have wanted to learn but just haven't yet OR are in need of a refresher course, I'll be teaching at Craft-O-Rama for several Thursday evenings over the next 2 months beginning, this week.  Check out their site here for scheduling and sign-up info.  Hope to see you there!

Time to pick up the boys from school.  Ciao for now!

Vickie

Hello, Los Angeles (or approximately 400 miles north of it)!

Top o' the Wednesday morning to you!  I mentioned earlier that I was going to be hanging out at Stitches West in Santa Clara, CA (Feb 22-24), but in my cedar-fever-induced-allergy medication-fog it's possible, that I was a tad vague on the details.    So my knitties, here's the skinny!

Partnered with SWTC and fashion advisor Lena Walker Smith, I'll be giving a "How to wear it" type presentation showing how the same garment can be worn successfully by completely different types of women with the help of foundation pieces and accessories.
Taking place on February 22nd at 11:45am, there'll be munchies, time for us to chat and loads of yarn to fondle.
Courtesy of Sterling Publishing and as a special Stitches West treat, those who attend my little event will also receive a preview pattern from my not-yet-released book, Catwalk Crochet.  The Stevie (AKA Arcade Fire Coat) coat seen below is crocheted from VHC Vegas yarn and is a great piece for defining an outfit or just throwing on for a cozy, beach stroll (gawdy gold belt, not required).

But wait, there's more!  The first 50 people to  buy a ticket in the next 3 minutes (or week ;)), will receive a FREE ball of VHC Rock yarn.  All you have to do is e-mail your ticket receipt to: info@soysilk.com and a little bundle of hemp/wool/Soysilk goodness will be on its way into your hot little hands (while supplies last).

So, to recap: Style inspiration, insider scoop on Knitty Gritty, Knit Aid, CRL and Catwalk Crochet, free pre-view pattern that will only be released to attendees of this one event (before book publication in late '08), munchies AND possible free yarn.  All that for the bargain price of $15!

Click here for purchasing details.  This is the first Stitches I've been to in 3 years, so I'm really looking forward to it.  Hope to meet you there!

Vickie

Help Bark Have More Bite!

My friend, artist Bernie Berlin (above with me & Jen P.) and the legions of furry friends she continues to help, need your support.   You may remember her organization A Place to Bark from last year's pattern for dog ears to benefit the the horribly mistreated pup, Noel (who now has a happy home, thanks to Bernie!)  Well, this year she's trying to win a matching grant for 50k to build a shelter for abandoned and abused dogs and cats. Through a massive grass-roots campaign she's in the front-running to make it happen,  but she's not there yet!  Please take a moment to read about her effort--including the 500 pets she's saved, and what you can do to nurture this amazing woman's passion for rescuing animals by meeting this financial goal.

If you're able to, give a couple of bucks--then go hug your own pet, who thankfully will never need a new place to bark (or meow).
I can't seem to get the badge graphics to embed in this post, but here's the direct link to where you can donate.  Oh, and in addition to traditional forms of payment, they also take Paypal!
Much love,
Vickie

New Year's Quiz

Sometimes I'm like freakin' Powder when it comes to techie gadgets.  It's possible, that I just run them into the ground with use but really, the way that electronics malfunction while in my presence is unsettling.  Does it happen to me more than most people?  Probably not.  Will I complain about it though, like it does?  Absolutely.
In what I've now deemed "The Great Mother*%&#board Blow-out of '07", I lost my entire Outlook inbox including several related to impending deadlines.  One of the disappearing e-mails contained info on who to send a small article for Interweave Crochet I wrote, so I jumped on Kim Werker's (mag editor-in-chief) blog for guidance.  On it she had filled out a questionnaire that clued me in on what's been going on with her.  I don't know her very well and I really enjoyed reading it because in some way, I think of blogs as frequently updated briefings on people you relate to, admire or, are just curious about.   You can read her post here and see my answers to the same questionnaire below.

(*Completely unrelated, as I'm typing this Blondie's "Call Me" is on the radio and I can't help thinking about watching her sing this song on Solid Gold in the early '80s--man, I loved her shiny pants!  My cousin Chris was an Associate Producer for the SG--remember, it's the one that was hosted by Marylin McCoo?--and I remember tuning in religiously just to see her name in the credits roll by.  The Blondie episode though, that was by far my favorite.  But I digress.)

1.  What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?
Eloped.  Visited Vancouver, Vermont, MN, Chicago and Massachusetts.  Produced a podcast.

2. What are your New Years Resolutions?
I don't so much do the resolution thing--I feel like they set us up for failure.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth in 2007?
Yes!  Both my best friend and sister-in-law had baby boys last spring.
Oh, and a good friend in California had her 3rd boy at age 44--wowza!

4.  Did anyone close to you die.
Fortunately, no.

5.  What countries did you visit?
Canada...barely.  I had to drive over the border to make it to a "She's Crafty" shoot.  I'm happy to report though, that I now have a valid passport and plan on (hopefully) using it in the near future.

6  What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?
Peace of mind, professionally.  Since royalties aren't a reality in how-to tv programming, my show being on hiatus for the entire year forced me to hustle... even more than usual.

7.  What date(s) in 2007 will remain etched in your memory and why?
March 30th, the day Dave & I got married in a wine cave in Napa Valley.
It'll also be hard not to think about February 14th 2007, every year on Valentines Day.  That was when all of us us DIY craft hosts and crew were trapped overnight in a house in Vermont during the largest blizzard in recent history.  And when I say "trapped", I mean snowed in...with wine, a great view and a roaring fireplace.  Poor us.  ;)

8.  What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Personally: Marrying my best friend and finally feeling like my children are happy and settled in our joint family situation.
Professionally:  Launching my own yarn line with SWTC and finishing writing a book (Knit Aid).

9.  What was your biggest failure?
Personally: Not getting anywhere near perfecting the co-parenting gig with the ex.
Professionally: Letting my name be used on a disastrous project that I had little to do with.

10.  Did you suffer any illness or injury?
Nah.  I was a little worn out after the tour/holiday special shoot extravaganza but thankfully, last year was spent feeling pretty healthy.

11.  What was the best thing someone bought you?
My new, red Fender Jaguar Bass (see above post)!

12.  Who's behavior merited celebration?
The families who were granted homes through Habitat for Humanity program I worked with in L.A..  They all had to work very hard to get through the approval process and continued to, aiding in the construction of their future residences.  Also, the little old ladies of South Carolina I met at Warm Up America who had assembled thousands of blankets collectively, for people in need.

13.  Who's behavior appalled and depressed you?
The members of the current U.S. administration.

14.  Where did most of your money go?
Bills, taxes, wardrobe for shoots and reinvestment in my necessities for my business.

15.  What did you get really, really excited about?
Running away to get married, seeing my kids experience Christmas morning, working with my new yarn line,  and the fantastic response to my little pet project, my podcast CRL.

16.  What song(s) reminds you of 2007?
"Love is a Place" by Metric, "Here's Your Future" , by The Thermals and, "Robots", by Flight of the Conchords

17.  Compared to last year are you...
a.)  Happier or Sadder?  Happier
b.) Thinner or Fatter?  I prefer, "working-to-bring-the-trend-of- too tight-clothing-back"
c.) Richer or Poorer?  (See answer to Question #6)

18.  What do you wish you'd done more of?
Making more gifts for my friends and family, rather than buying them.
Set aside more time for charity.

19.  What do you wish you'd done less of?
Hustling and traveling for work (See #6)

20.  How did you spend Christmas?
At home with my family, mom and mother-in-law.  It was lovely.

21.  Did you fall in love in 2007.
I fell deeper, yes.

22.  How many one night stands did you have?
None.  Thankfully, I'm officially out of that world.

23.  What was your favorite TV program?
Dexter & Big Love

24.  Do you hate anyone now that you didn't this time last year?
I may choose to distance myself from certain people but, I don't really ever hate anyone, ever.  Hatred takes up too much energy that I'd rather expel in other ways.

25.  What was the best book you read?
Middlesex

26.   What did you do on your birthday and how old were you?
Went with the fam to my friends Courtney & Matt's house for an early, Thanksgiving celebration.  I turned 34.

27.  What was your best musical discovery?
Oooh, that's a tough one.  I discovered a ton of new bands last year.   I guess though out of all of them, I probably listened to The Thermals, Great Northern, Mew and Silversun Pickups the most.

28.   What did you want and get?
I agree with Kim, this is a weird question.  A pink pony?  A trip to the moon?  Kidding.
Everything I really want and have revolves around my family and friends.

29.  What was your favorite film of the year?
Another tough one, I'm as big of filmphile as I am a musicphile (and yes, I know those aren't real words).   I loved Knocked Up, Sweeney Todd and Gone Baby Gone, though.

**Addendum: Since originally posting this quiz I watched Juno & 3:10 to Yuma, which were both AWESOME.  Thank you.

30.  What did you want and not get?
Floor to ceiling bookshelves.  ;)

31.  What one thing would've made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
More respect from the broadcast community for crafts and overall do-it-yourself lifestyle hobbies and art forms as valid genres of entertainment and audience interest.

32.  How would you describe your fashion concept for 2007?
Same as always, really: casual funky with influences from art, music, screen and both modern and retro trends.  I did bring back more black into my wardrobe this year.  I missed it. :)

33.  What kept you sane?
Dave, my best friend Tammy, and wine.

34.  Which celebrity or public figure did you admire most?
Al Gore & Barack Obama for waking up the collective conscious of this country (and others).
The writers on strike for standing up for their rights.

35.  What political issue stirred you most?
Women's rights, health care and environmentalism.

36.  Who do you miss?
My brother in California.

37.  Who was the best new person you met?
My new friend, Adrienne.  She's the kindest, most giving person I met in 2007.

38.  Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned?
Have faith in people, but trust yourself more.

39.  Quote a song line that defines your year.
"Every rose has it's thorn
Just like every night has it's dawn
Just like every cowboy
sings his sad, sad song
Every rose has it's thorn.
Yeah it does."
--Poison
(At this point in the quiz, I'm clearly just entertaining myself)

Happy hump day! (If I this post wasn't already way too long, I'd get in to how much despise ending in "ump" make me gag.)

Vickie

Bass Yourself!

I finally finished the first draft of Catwalk Crochet over the weekend, so now feel like I can take a few moments to bask in the glow of awesomeness, that is my new bass guitar. *holding for basking*
I've been wanting to learn how to play for something like 15 years and now that my sweet husband surprised me at Christmas with this beauty, I have little to no excuse for letting another year go by without at least trying.  Excuse me as I geek out a bit about it:  she's a Fender Jaguar with chrome detailing, a mint pick guard and mother of pearl (heh, I accidently typed purl at first) inlays.   Originally owned by The Skunks Jesse Sublett, a predominant figure in the establishment of the Austin live music and punk scenes, this bass has a great vibe about it.  Jesse also played in studio with Patty Smith, has written several novels and has a really remarkable story  of living for almost 15 years with stage four cancer. Anyway, you can tell that it was played by someone who loved and babied it, and I plan to continue the tradition.
Dave took hot-chick-sprawled-on the hood of a-Trans Am equivalent photos of the bass laid out on our deep purple bedspread.  Those photos alas, seem to be currently MIA--most likely lost in the great mother&*^%board crash of '07.  That said, these will have to do.

For those of you who listened to the last episode of my podcast with guest Kelley Deal, you heard her teasing me mercilessly about making me perform for her and her sister Kim (formerly of The Pixies) while The Breeders are in Austin in March for SXSW.  She challenged me to either learn Gigantic or Cannonball by then, so she could test me.    If that isn't stress-inducing motivation, I don't know what is!  I've been so focused on finishing the book though, that I've only practiced a bit.  I have the notes down for Gigantic, but not so much the pace yet. Wish me luck!  Guitar Gods know, I'm gonna need it!

Thank you for listening.  You may now return to your regularly scheduled crafting.

Vickie

Lyra Hat

Speaking of being obsessed with knitwear in movies (see Sweeney Todd post), I just put a new hat pattern up on my shop page inspired by one worn by the character Lyra wore in Golden Compass.
I got all fancy-like and made my version in seed stitch with a cabled headband, silk ribbon and picot edging but the shape's the same as their version.  Oh, and of course, it's knit in the golden color of VEGAS because I'm apparently feeling literal these days. ;)

Chica Beenie--Free Project by Kathy Cano Murillo!

Ms. Kathy Cano-Murillo, namesake of  the "Chica" color of CRAFT, has whipped up a great little cap out of it and shared the pattern with us via her blog.   Here's a  link to it for your crochet enjoyment. Enjoy!  xo, Vic
